Iwnetim (Tim) Abate is a PhD student in Materials Science & Engineering and is co-advised by Professor Tom Devereaux. His research aims to improve the energy storage capacity of batteries to meet the ever-growing global demand for energy. To this end, his work combines x-ray and electrochemical characterization with quantum mechanical simulations to better understand the limitations of Lithium and Sodium-ion batteries. Prior to joining Stanford, he did research stint at IBM Alamden and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Tim obtained his B.S. in physics with minor in economics and mathematics from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Outside the lab, he enjoys swimming, hiking, ethnic food and listening to Jazz.
